How much free space is needed around a microwave oven?
For your safety, ensure that when placing a microwave oven you observe all the safety regulations and instructions that come with the microwave oven, including allowing for venting areas and safety clearances. There should also be enough room left for plugs or pipes. But from a usability point of view, you will need sufficient space in front of a microwave oven to be able to open its door fully and use it. For this you will likely need 80 cm at minimum, so a 30 cm deep microwave oven will need 70 cm in total. Also keep in mind that in many cases you will need to open the door completely, to the side of the appliance, so placing a microwave oven next to a wall or other obstruction may cause problems.
What is the best way to measure the space to fit a microwave oven in?
Measure the width and the depth of the floor area where you'd like to place a microwave oven. The easiest way is to use a measuring tape. Hold the beginning down at the edge of the area, and let it run to the opposite edge. Make sure the tape is not diagonal, as otherwise you would overestimate the available space. If the distance is larger than what you can stretch to with your arms, ask a friend for help, or divide the distance into multiple parts. This can be done by either holding the tape down partway through and continuing running it while letting the first end go, or by marking how far you measured on the floor or wall, and reposition the tape to complete the measurement. If you would not like to draw on your floor, try putting down a pointy object like a pen there. Don't forget to avoid dead places where the piece of furniture won't go like skirting boards. Also it may be necessary to measure the height of the space wherever the ceiling is low like in loft rooms.
